March 3, 2011. Sarnath, Varanasi.
On the penultimate day of the Tibetan year—the 29th day of the twelfth month in the Tibetan calendar—Gyalwang Karmapa attended the third day of this year’s traditional Mahakala ritual, held before the year’s end to remove obstacles. Two-armed Mahakala or Bernakchen, is the protector of the Karma Kagyu. His Holiness, accompanied by Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, presided over the assembly of monks from Thrangu Rinpoche’s monastery, international students attending the annual Vajra Vidya shedra, and devotees.
