Karma Pakshi in Kingston: Karmapa Confers Empowerment

2015.04.19 KarmaPhakshi emp
(April 19, 2015 – Kingston, New York) In the Ulster Performing Arts Center, an appliqué thangka of the Buddha, flanked by his two main disciples, descended from the ceiling of the stage to its floor, filling the space with a vibrant cascade of rich color. This special image was last displayed publicly decades ago, when it was unfurled by Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche on the exterior of the old building of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD), which was sponsoring this evening’s event. Immediately below the resplendent Buddha was the Karmapa’s throne and on his right, the two tiers of an altar held the traditional offerings and crystal for the ritual purification. As the Karmapa sat on the throne, his golden and maroon robes blended seamlessly with the hues of the thangka so that he became a part of it, bringing the image to life.

After a mandala offering, the Karmapa spoke to the audience about the lineage of the Karmapas. He noted that usually Read the rest of this article

‘I Express Myself Through Art’, The Gyalwang Karmapa Tells US Students

Untitled-2

28 May 2013 – Gyuto Monastery, Dharamsala

When a group of students from Emory University in the United States recently visited the Gyalwang Karmapa, he spoke candidly with them about his life.

The group of around 26 students, led by Geshe Lobsang Tenzin, travelled to Gyuto Monastery during an annual study-abroad program, and spent about an hour with the Gyalwang Karmapa.

When asked by one student about the role of art in his life, the Gyalwang Karmapa responded,

“There could be a number of reasons why art is important, and it’s not necessarily important to everyone for the same reason. In my case, when the environment around me seems to be quite restricting, which happens to be often, and I feel the need to vent out this feeling of restriction that I’m bound by, then I want to put my feelings of creativity or imagination on paper or canvas and nobody’s trying to restrict me from doing that. For me art is a very important way to express myself under such circumstances, to have an outlet for my creative Read the rest of this article

His Holiness the Karmapa Speaks on Compassion and the Nature of Mind on the Eve of His Departure to India

July 29, 2011 – Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, NYC

His Holiness the Karmapa’s last public talk of His second overseas trip was held in Kaye Playhouse at Hunter College, New York City, on July 29. The admission tickets were taken up quickly on opening day of the online ticket sale. On the day of the talk, many arrived at the lecture hall two hours early, intending to find a good seat in their designated area. Some arrived without a ticket, hoping to be lucky enough to attend the talk at the last minute. An article in that day’s New York Times, “A Young Tibetan Lama Prepares for a Greater Role,” no doubt stimulated interest in the talk among the public.

Before 7:00 p.m., the seven hundred seats of the two-story lecture hall were filled completely. There were also about two thousand and five hundred viewers on the live webcast, waiting eagerly for this concluding talk of His Read the rest of this article

The Gyalwang Karmapa Continues KTD Teachings, Offers Buddha Shakyamuni Transmission

July 19, 2011 – NY Woodstock KTD

Disciples from afar gathered again today at KTD in New York, for a second full day of Dharma nectar dispensed by the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa. Continuing his historic second visit to the United States, His Holiness the Karmapa began the morning session by announcing that rather than the previously announced Thousand Buddha initiation, he would confer Buddha Shakyamuni meditation transmission. Explaining the change in plans, His Holiness first commented that the Thousand Buddha initiation is an elaborate initiation involving considerable time to prepare. He added that authentic tantric initiations are precious and of great value, and therefore it might be best not to confer them too readily. With this stance, His Holiness continued a theme he had touched on the previous day, when he observed that nowadays there is a tendency for people to feel that they have already accomplished something simply by having Read the rest of this article
