Message from Gyalwang Karmapa in Response to Devastating Earthquake Striking the Region of Yushu in Tso-ngön [Qinghai Province]

I was extremely saddened to hear of the catastrophic loss of human life and the severe destruction caused by the recent earthquake in the region of Yushu in Tso-ngön [Qinghai Province]. I am now leading a group of Kagyü monasteries in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and other areas in prayers and virtuous activities dedicated to the deceased, so that their fears of the transitions between life and death may be eased. Through traditional offerings of respect, I have also formally requested the prayers of great masters from the various Tibetan spiritual lineages.

I am holding the survivors of this tragedy in my thoughts as well, and I hope that aid quickly reaches them. By bearing witness to the harshness of cyclic existence and allowing this to broaden our hearts and minds, may we all be able to extend our effort in meaningful ways, for the sake of both the living and the dead. 10 day Tibetan Shoton Festival Begins

March 27, 2010 – Dharamsala

This beginning of the 15th Shoton festival, an annual celebration of Tibetan Opera (Lhamo), was blessed and inaugurated by His Holiness the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje. The event opened at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) in Dharamsala on 27th March, 2010. His Holiness presided at the TIPA performance as the chief guest. From all over India and Nepal, Tibetan Opera associations from Tibetan communities came together to perform Tibetan dramatic arts. Through dramatic performances of song and choreographed dance, vibrant traditional Tibetan artistic practices were expressed.

In Tibet, Shoton is held annually from the end of the sixth month to the middle of the seventh month (according to the Tibetan Lunar calendar) and traditionally celebrates the coming of spring and a generous harvest

This year, the participating performance company will travel to six Tibetan Schools in the Dharamsala area, to introduce this historic Tibetan art and opera to the younger Tibetan generations. The school tour commences from Lower TCV on 29 March, 2010.

Former Union Minister and Mr George Fernandes Meet His Holiness Gyalwang Karmapa

July 2, 2009 – Dharamshala / Gyuto:

Former Union Minister and one of the most prominent supporters of the Tibetan cause, Mr. George Fernandes, met His Holiness the Gyalwang Karmapa at his Gyuto residence. Mr. Fernandes was accompanied by Ajay Singh, the former deputy union minister, along with his wife.

Early on June 23rd, a group of visiting Nepali Parliamentary Members met His Holiness in Gyuto. The party was comprised of six MPs, including two women and Siddharth Gautam, President of the Lumbini Foundation for Development & Peace. Read more

The Tsurphu Labrang (Karmapa’s office of Administration) joined by all Kagyu Monasteries from India and Nepal offered a welcome dinner reception in the honor of His Holiness at the Radisson Hotel. The large reception included many prominent people:

His Holiness Continues His Tour with Visit to Kalu Rinpoche Stupa and Public Blessing Ceremony (November 2006)

His Holiness offered the blessing initiation of long life to a large crowd of disciples who had gathered from all over the region, including Nepal, Bhutan, West Bengal, as well as the nearby seat in India for the Gyalwa Karmapas, in Rumtek, Sikkim, India.

His Holiness Karmapa’s Fall-Winter 2006 tour continued as His Holiness visited the Siliguri, west Bengal, area on November 16-17.
