Gyalwang Karmapa Initiates Revamp of Nuns’ Education, Announces First “Arya Kshema Winter Debates” for Nuns

Gyalwang Karmapa convened a meeting to initiate an overhaul of education for Tibetan Buddhist nuns, and particularly for nuns of the Karma Kagyu tradition. Over the course of two days, the Gyalwang Karmapa met with senior members of eight nunneries to discuss plans to offer nuns the opportunity to engage in rigorous philosophical study up to the highest standards.

As an initial step towards this aim, the Gyalwang Karmapa will inaugurate the Arya Kshema Winter Debates this coming winter. A bhikshuni who was a direct disciple of Buddha Shakyamuni, Arya Kshema (known as Ayya Khema in Pali) was pronounced by the Buddha to be foremost among his female disciples in wisdom and confident eloquence.

Since the nuns’ study and debate curriculum is still under development, the inaugural session of the first winter debates will center not on dialectical debate, but on laying the groundwork for the future. The Gyalwang Karmapa stated that the First Arya Read the rest of this article

His Holiness the Karmapa initiates a historic transmission, mainly for female practitioners
(26 October, 2012, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh) In an unprecedented three-day event, His Holiness the 17thKarmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is granting initiation and teachings on Chöd. A spiritual practice developed by Machig Labdron, a Tibetan yogini in the 11th century, Chöd is practiced by nearly all sects of Tibetan Buddhism to this day. Approximately 1,000 people from across the Himalayan region and around the world are here to attend this historic Dharma transmission, which is being conferred for the first time by His Holiness in response to a supplication made by a western Buddhist woman, Lama Tsultrim Allione, on behalf of all women practitioners. Lama Tsultrim was ordained in 1970 as a Buddhist nun by His Holiness the 16th Karmapa, and later pursued the path as a lay practitioner.

Official Statement from The Karmapa Office of Administration

(9 December, 2011) In the light of the recent media reports, Karmapa’s Office of Administration wishes to reassure His Holiness the Karmapa’s disciples in India and around the world and the concerned public that as of today we have received no court orders. The matter remains under judicial consideration and we cannot therefore comment further at this stage.

Since the outset of the investigations, His Holiness’ office of administration has been co-operating fully with the investigating agencies. We had provided them with full documents and details regarding the case. During this entire process, His Holiness the Karmapa was never at any point called or examined by the investigating agency. His Holiness has no involvement, direct or indirect, in the financial administration or managing the day-to-day affairs of the office or trust. Read more

The cash seized earlier this year came from donations offered by disciples from around the world who come to see His Holiness and pay their respects to him, often leaving behind cash donations. His Holiness the Karmapa Cleared by Himachal Pradesh Government

11 February, 2011. Dharamsala

This afternoon, the Himachal Pradesh chief secretary Rajwant Sandhu told reporters that, “there is no involvement of the Karmapa. We have reasons to believe that some donations came for the monastery and the Karmapa has nothing to do with that. Monastery functionaries were managing the affairs.”

The chief secretary was also quoted as saying; “The Karmapa is a religious head and has followers across the world. We respect their religious activities. We don’t interfere in any religious affairs. We have full respect for their religious activities and are in no way intending curbing them in any form or manner as also we are aware of the fact that the Karmapa is not involved in any monetary activities or shady benami land deals.”
