The Winter Debates in Bodhgaya

19th December – Bodhgaya.

The sixteenth session of the Winter Debates began this year on November 23 at Tergar Monastery in Bodhgaya, India. The daily schedule included debates during the morning and in the afternoon, the Karmapa’s teaching on a text by the Eighth Karmapa, Mikyö Dorje, called The One Hundred Short Instructions. Throughout his presentation, the Karmapa emphasized the importance of balancing study with practice, of tempering intellectual pursuit with realization arising from experience. In the Tibetan tradition, debating is an integral part of intellectual and experiential training. Its purpose is to probe an individual’s knowledge of Dharma, to remove doubts, and to elucidate what is not clear. Debating helps to ensure that understanding does not stay at the level of words, but goes deeper into the meaning. It also allows a great number of topics to be explored in a short time and to be retained more easily.

We Live to Benefit Beings

As usual, the lilting chant of Karma Khyenno fills the pavilion. After the Karmapa is seated on his throne, today’s long life offering is made by Khenpo Donyo and the Mirik Monastery of Bokar Rinpoche.

His Holiness begins by speaking of people who are destitute and without protection. For all of them, we should have a special compassion. We should extend it to those who are difficult to transform, who have engaged in many negative activities, and thereby brought suffering upon themselves in this and future lives. We should see all of them as a treasure and feel a particular compassion for them.

His Holiness Concludes Fall-Winter Tour

The Karmapa arrived back to his temporary camp at Gyuto Monastic College in Dharamsala, after presiding over the the Great Monlam Aspiration of the Glorious Unequaled Kagyu Sangha (Pal Nyammay Kagyupay Sangha Monlam Chenmo) in Bodhgaya, Bihar, India. He also offered the Chakrasambhara and Green Tara initiations at Tergar Monstery, and was a Buddhist representative at the interfaith ceremony commemorating the Enlightenment and Parinirvana of Lord Buddha 2550 years ago. Before arriving in Bihar, His Holiness presided over the Karma Gön Chö, the Winter Retreat for Debate and Logical Study, held annually at Vajra Vidhya Institute in Sarnath, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. HH Karmapa also hosted His Holiness Dalai Lama at Vajra Vidya Institute. At the inception of his Fall-Winter Tour, His Holiness presided over the Parinirvana Anniversary of Very Ven. On October 4, His Holiness presided over the concluding funerary ceremonies for the Very Venerable Bokar Rinpoche at Bokar Monastery in Mirik, Darjeeling, India. His Holiness left Gyuto for Delhi, where he flew to the Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, arriving at 1:35 PM.
